While we will always be obsessed with the art of braiding and we still offer all sorts of braided hairstyles, sometimes your hair and scalp just need a little vacation. I know this firsthand! Now and then, I want to try something new in my hair that isn’t braids. A blowout is the absolute perfect style for when you need a break from braids but still want to leave the salon looking flawless and good to go.
The best part about getting a blowout? It doesn’t take all day. If you have a busy schedule, maybe you’ve discarded box braids because they take a whole afternoon. I bet you’ll love that a professional blowout only takes about 60 to 90 minutes. In just over an hour, you can completely transform your vibe!
Blowouts offer incredible versatility and volume, giving you that effortless, bouncy, head-turning movement. If you’re in Puerto Rico, maybe you want to try something new to go dancing or for a romantic date in Old San Juan, and not necessarily keep the same look you take to the beach. Many people hesitate before getting a blowout because they fear it may damage their hair. If you have natural hair like me, you already know that we’re predisposed to hair dryness. How can you take better care of your hair and still enjoy a beautiful blowout? Here are some tips!
Always let professional stylists handle your hair. They’ve been trained for a long time and can properly look after your hair health, not just make it look beautiful.
Use a good leave-in product, such as hair spray or a leave-in conditioner. This will help you maintain your hair's natural moisture.
Avoid blow-drying your hair when it’s soaking wet. When you ask for a hair wash in Sunny Braids, we make sure we dry it with a towel first, and only once your hair is damp do we apply heat.
Take it slow. Take a proper time for your blowout. It’s better to choose a low setting on your hair dryer to prevent intense heat. Also, it’s better to split the hair into sections and dry one at a time instead of trying to dry all your hair at once. When you book your appointment for a hair blowout, we recommend you save at least 90 minutes of your day so we don’t rush the process.
Beating PR Humidity: How to Prevent Frizz and Protect Your Blowout
We know what you might be thinking: A blowout? In this Puerto Rican humidity?
Yes! It is entirely possible to rock a sleek, frizz-free style even with our beautiful (but intense) tropical weather. The key is in the products and the aftercare. That’s why you want to put your hair in the hands of professional stylists, and not risk a poor result by taking the matter into your own hands.
To help you fight the PR humidity, we highly recommend finishing your style with the Color Wow Dream Coat spray. I’ve tried it on my own hair, and I think I’m in love! This miracle product acts like a mini raincoat for your strands, essentially waterproofing your hair and blocking out the moisture that causes frizz and swelling.
Once you leave the studio, the longevity of your style is in your hands. Of course, if you want a hairstyle that lasts your entire beach vacation, I’d recommend getting our beloved braids. Still, you can take care of your blowout and keep it looking fresh for days. Here are some tips for a long-lasting blowout:
Protect Your Hair Overnight
As with your braids, how you sleep affects how long your blowout lasts. Wrap your hair! To do this, you have to trust in a Caribbean classic: the tubi wrap (doobie wrap). Wrapping your hair in a tubi before you go to sleep protects your hair from friction, preserves the straightness and volume, and locks out nighttime sweat and humidity.
For straight hair, wrap it around your head in a circular motion and secure it with flat clips or a silk scarf to keep hair flat and tangle-free. For wavy or voluminous blowouts, loosely coil hair into top-knot pin curls.
To prevent frizz, some fabrics are your best friends. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize friction, split ends, and frizz while you toss and turn.
Block Humidity and Steam
Water and ambient humidity cause smooth hair cuticles to swell and revert to their natural texture, whether wavy, curly, or coily. You want to keep your hair dry as long as possible! That’s why you always shower with a lined shower cap. I recommend you use a micro-fiber cap that seals tightly along the hairline to absorb steam before it hits your strands.
Another secret is applying humidity shields: Finish your style with an anti-humidity spray or light silicone serum to create an invisible seal against moisture in the air. Pair a good tubi with your Color Wow spray, and that PR humidity won't stand a chance!
Manage Scalp Oils and Volume
Here is another obstacle for long-lasting blowouts. Oil accumulation at the scalp causes hair to look flat and stringy by day two or three. Fortunately, there are a few more tricks you can implement! Dry shampoo is your best friend, and you should apply it proactively. Spray it at the hair roots on day two (before your scalp looks noticeably oily) so it can absorb excess sebum throughout the day.
Most importantly, avoid touching your hair: Natural oils from your hands transfer directly to your strands, flattening volume and accelerating oiliness.
Hydrate the Ends and Touch Up
While roots get oily, the mid-lengths and ends tend to lose moisture over time. To avoid this, nourish the tips: Smooth 1–2 drops of lightweight oil (such as argan or jojoba) onto the very ends to restore shine and keep cuticles sealed.
Last but not least, you can always apply minimal heat touch-ups: If face-framing layers lose shape, use a warm round brush or large-barrel wand on low heat only where necessary, always applying a light heat protectant first.

Deja siempre tu cabello en manos de estilistas profesionales. Se han preparado durante mucho tiempo y saben cómo cuidar la salud de tu cabello, no solo hacerlo lucir hermoso.
Usa un buen producto sin enjuague (leave-in), como un spray capilar o un acondicionador leave-in. Esto te ayudará a mantener la humedad natural de tu cabello.
Evita secar tu cabello cuando esté empapado. Cuando pides un servicio de lavado en Sunny Braids, nos aseguramos de secarlo primero con una toalla y solo cuando el cabello está húmedo aplicamos calor.
Tómalo con calma. Tómate el tiempo adecuado para tu blower. Es mejor elegir una temperatura baja en el secador para evitar el calor intenso. Además, es preferible dividir el cabello en secciones y secar una a la vez en lugar de intentar secar todo el cabello de golpe. Aun así, puedes cuidar tu blower y mantenerlo fresco durante días. Aquí tienes algunos consejos para que tu estilo dure más tiempo:
Protege tu cabello durante la noche
Al igual que con tus trenzas, la forma en que duermes afecta la duración de tu blower. ¡Envuélvete el cabello! Para esto, tienes que confiar en un clásico caribeño: el tubi (o doobie wrap). Hacerte un tubi antes de irte a dormir protege tu cabello de la fricción, conserva el alisado y el volumen, y frena el sudor nocturno y la humedad.
Para el cabello lacio, envuélvelo alrededor de la cabeza en un movimiento circular y sujétalo con pinzas planas o un pañuelo de seda para mantenerlo liso y sin enredos. Para blowers ondulados o con mucho volumen, enrolla el cabello suavemente en un moño alto fijado con pinzas (pin curls).
Para evitar el frizz, ciertas telas son tus mejores aliadas. Duerme sobre una funda de almohada de seda o satén para minimizar la fricción, las puntas abiertas y el frizz mientras das vueltas en la cama.
Bloquea la humedad y el vapor
El agua y la humedad ambiental hacen que las cutículas del cabello liso se hinchen y vuelvan a su textura natural, ya sea ondulada, rizada o afro. ¡Quieres conservar tu cabello seco el mayor tiempo posible! Por eso, dúchate siempre con un gorro forrado. Te recomiendo usar un gorro con forro de microfibra que selle bien en la línea del cabello para absorber el vapor antes de que toque tus hebras.
Otro secreto es aplicar protectores de humedad: finaliza tu peinado con un spray antihumedad o un suero ligero de silicona para crear un sello invisible contra la humedad del aire. Junta un buen tubi con tu spray Color Wow, ¡y no le dejarás ninguna oportunidad a esa humedad de PR!
Controla la grasa del cuero cabelludo y el volumen
Aquí hay otro obstáculo para los blowers duraderos: la acumulación de grasa en el cuero cabelludo hace que el cabello luzca pesado y aplastado para el segundo o tercer día. ¡Afortunadamente, hay más trucos que puedes aplicar! El champú en seco es tu mejor amigo y debes usarlo de manera preventiva. Aplícalo en las raíces en el segundo día (antes de que el cuero cabelludo se vea grasoso) para que pueda absorber el exceso de grasa a lo largo del día.
Lo más importante: evita tocarte el cabello. Los aceites naturales de tus manos se transfieren directamente a tus hebras, tumbando el volumen y acelerando la grasitud.
Hidrata las puntas y haz retoques
Mientras que las raíces se vuelven grasosas, los medios y las puntas tienden a perder humedad con el tiempo. Para evitar esto, nutre las puntas: aplica 1 o 2 gotas de un aceite ligero (como argán o jojoba) en las puntas para devolverles el brillo y mantener las cutículas selladas.
Por último, pero no menos importante, siempre puedes hacer retoques mínimos con calor: si las capas que enmarcan tu rostro pierden forma, usa un cepillo redondo tibio o una tenaza de barril grande a baja temperatura solo donde sea necesario, aplicando siempre un protector térmico ligero primero.
