And yes, in the past, I may have written something like “all kinds of braided hairstyles,” but not anymore! While some new braided hairstyles are here to stay, we’ve said goodbye to others. Why Come Up With a Limited Hairstyle List? A Strategic Decision

I remember very well when I started to braid. Back then, I would do any single hairstyle a client would request. It was a personal challenge! I wanted to learn them all, and they seemed super cool.

So, when I began my professional braiding career, anytime a new hairstyle request arrived, I said ‘yes’ without giving it a lot of thought. Then, I got into a YouTube tutorial marathon to check out the different techniques other professional braiders used to create them. You wouldn’t believe how many different ways to create braids are out there! It took me a while to develop the right techniques I now teach to fellow braiders who want to launch their career. 

I chose the one I preferred and practiced it on the mannequin head. By the time the client arrived at the studio, I felt confident about myself and acted as if I had a lot of experience creating such a hairstyle, up to the point that clients couldn’t even tell it was my first time. Sometimes, I would drop the news after I was done, and they looked thrilled!

Still, after all this time, I’ve concluded that quality is better than quantity. Have you heard that old saying that goes “A jack of all trades, master of none”? Think about it this way: When you go to a restaurant that serves all kinds of meals, you know that most dishes will be just okay. But if you ask for the specialty, you know you’re in for a treat. And if you are really looking forward to eating a specific dish, such as pasta, you don’t go anywhere: You aim for the closest Italian restaurant. 

Well, after giving it a lot of thought, I discovered the same applies to hair. I believe it’s better to offer fewer hairstyles but focus our whole energy on creating their best possible version. Our New Hairstyle List

Ever since I started braiding, I discovered that the most popular braided hairstyles are cornrows and box braids. Nowadays, I consider them our specialty! In Sunny Braids, we’ve developed the most efficient techniques for top-quality, long-lasting braids that our clients love. We also offer fast hairstyles like two braids or hair wraps for those in a rush to hit the beach or take a day trip somewhere on our island. 

Here is our new list so you can choose your next hairstyle for your braiding appointment in Puerto Rico:

1. Box Braids: These braids are created by parting the hair in square sections, called ‘boxes’. You can opt for small, medium & jumbo box braids. Just keep in mind the smaller the braids, the more you get done, and the longer the braiding appointment. Consider that box braids may take several hours when you book.

2. Knotless Braids: They’re similar to box braids and also come in small, medium & jumbo sizes. Because they are created with less tension, they are perfect if you have a sensitive scalp and you want to help your hair grow.

3. Fulani Braids: They are a hybrid of cornrows (which means their base remains attached to your scalp) and more versatile braids you can style as you like. Did you know that this hairstyle is named after the Fulani (or Fula) people of West Africa and the Sahel region, who are known for their unique and intricate braiding traditions?

4. Feed-Ins: They are cornrows with extensions, and you can opt for 2, 4 & 6. They look fabulous and last for your entire beach vacation.

5. Hair Wrap: A quick, easy, and fun hair accessory, perfect for kids on vacation or for clients who only want a slight touch. Also, it’s a perfect hairstyle if you are on a tight budget 😉

6. Straight Back Cornrows: This hairstyle is created by braiding hair strands very close to the scalp, so they remain in place no matter how much you shake your head on the dancefloor, surfing, or scuba diving. You can ask for 2, 4, 6 & 8 cornrows.

7. Box Braids (natural hair): You don’t need to add extensions to look fabulous! Ask for either small or large braids with just your natural strands. Braids keep your hair protected from the sun, wind, and saltwater.

8. Cornrows with a simple design: We play with partitions to come up with cool designs on your scalp. By the way, this is one of the favorite hairstyles for men, who also look great in braids.

9. Pop Smoke: And, speaking about men who wear braids, you may ask for 6 & 8 of these braids named after the famous artist.

One of our braiders is really sad about the loss of boho braids, which were her favorite creation. She recently achieved such spectacular bohos that we shared them on our social media accounts, and she proudly showed them to her friends. Many of her followers helped her viralize her work. It was such an amazing job!

In any case, here are the reasons for our decision:

Efficiency

We want to make sure every client gets their braids in the right time and no appointments overlap. Considering that small boho braids may take up to 7 hours… well, they are not so efficient, no matter how great they look.

Reducing Variables

Our current hairstyle list allows us to handle every different client’s hair type. Also, regarding extensions, some hairstyles require 100% human hair, which tangles less but is way pricier. In our studio, we offer a product that is a hybrid between human hair and synthetic.

Popularity

Sure, every now and then, we get a client who wants a rare hairstyle. But most of the time, people come looking for the most popular styles, such as cornrows and box braids (here I tell you about the main differences between the two hairstyles). Giving them a whole lot of options is more likely to confuse them. After all, many tourists looking for braids in Puerto Rico are having their hair braided for the first time!

The Training Process

We have the goal of empowering local braiding artists (and braid enthusiasts who haven’t dreamed of becoming professionals until now). That’s why we’re offering braiding seminars and private classes. 

By reducing our hairstyle list, we can train braiders to create those 9 hairstyles that need the same braiding techniques with just minor variations, such as hair partitions. Hairstyles like twists or dreadlocks require a whole different set of braiding skills.

Y sí, antes escribí algo como "todo tipo de peinados trenzados", ¡pero ya no! Si bien algunos peinados trenzados nuevos llegaron para quedarse, otros se han despedido. ¿Te interesa saber por qué?

En este artículo, te contaré sobre una importante decisión estratégica que tomamos recientemente y te presentaré nuestra nueva lista de peinados. ¿Por qué crear una lista limitada de peinados? Una decisión estratégica

Recuerdo muy bien cuando empecé a trenzar. En aquel entonces, hacía cualquier peinado que me pidiera una clienta. ¡Era un reto personal! Quería aprenderlos todos y me parecían muy cool.

Así que, cuando empecé mi carrera profesional como trenzadora, cada vez que me pedían un nuevo peinado, decía que sí sin pensarlo mucho. Después, me metía en un maratón de tutoriales de YouTube para ver las diferentes técnicas que usaban otras trenzadoras profesionales. ¡No te imaginas la cantidad de maneras diferentes de hacer trenzas que hay! Me llevó un tiempo desarrollar las técnicas adecuadas que ahora enseño a otras trenzadoras que quieren lanzar su carrera.

Elegía la que más me gustaba y la practicaba en la cabeza del maniquí. Para cuando la clienta llegaba al estudio, me sentía segura de mí misma y actuaba como si tuviera mucha experiencia creando ese tipo de peinado, hasta el punto de que las clientas ni siquiera se daban cuenta de que era mi primera vez. A veces, les daba la noticia después de terminar, ¡y se veían encantadas!

Aún así, después de todo este tiempo, he llegado a la conclusión de que más vale calidad que cantidad. ¿Has oído ese viejo dicho que dice "Quien mucho hace, nada hace"? Piénsalo así: cuando vas a un restaurante que sirve todo tipo de comidas, sabes que la mayoría de los platos estarán bien. Pero si preguntas por la especialidad, sabes que te espera una delicia. Y si tienes muchas ganas de comer un plato específico, como pasta, no vas a un sitio al azar: buscas el restaurante italiano más cercano.

Bueno, después de pensarlo mucho, descubrí que lo mismo aplica al cabello. Creo que es mejor ofrecer menos peinados y concentrarnos en crear la mejor versión posible de los mismos. ¿No te parece? Nuestra nueva lista de peinados

Desde que empecé a trenzar, descubrí que los peinados trenzados más populares son las cornrows y las box braids. ¡Hoy en día, las considero nuestra especialidad! En Sunny Braids, hemos desarrollado las técnicas más eficientes para lograr trenzas de alta calidad y duraderas que a nuestros clientes les encantan. También ofrecemos peinados rápidos como dos trenzas o envolturas de cabello para quienes tienen prisa por ir a la playa o hacer una excursión de todo el día a algún lugar de nuestra isla.

Aquí tienes nuestra nueva lista para que puedas elegir tu próximo peinado para tu cita de trenzado en Puerto Rico:

1. Box braids: Estas trenzas se crean dividiendo el cabello en secciones cuadradas, llamadas "cajas". Puedes optar por box braids pequeñas, medianas y jumbo. Ten en cuenta que cuanto más pequeñas sean las trenzas, más cantidad de las mismas se te hará y más larga será la cita. Ten en cuenta que las box braids pueden tardar varias horas al momento de reservar tu cita.

2. Trenzas sin nudos: Son similares a las box braids y también vienen en tamaños pequeño, mediano y jumbo. Al crearse con menos tensión, son perfectas si tienes el cuero cabelludo sensible y quieres ayudar a que tu cabello crezca.

3. Trenzas Fulani: Son un híbrido entre las cornrows (lo que significa que su base permanece adherida al cuero cabelludo) y trenzas más versátiles que puedes peinar como quieras. ¿Sabías que este peinado lleva el nombre del pueblo Fulani (o Fula) de África Occidental y la región del Sahel, conocido por sus singulares e intrincadas tradiciones de trenzado?

4. Trenzas con extensiones: Son cornrows con extensiones, y puedes elegir 2, 4 o 6. Quedan fabulosas y duran toda tu estancia en la playa.

5. Envoltura para el cabello: Un accesorio para el cabello rápido, fácil y divertido, perfecto para niños de vacaciones o para clientes que solo quieren un toque ligero. Además, es un peinado perfecto si tienes un presupuesto ajustado 😉

6. Cornrows rectas hacia atrás: Este peinado se crea trenzando mechones de cabello muy cerca del cuero cabelludo, para que se mantengan en su lugar sin importar cuánto muevas la cabeza en la pista de baile, surfeando o buceando. Puedes pedir 2, 4, 6 u 8 cornrows.

7. Box braids (cabello natural): ¡No necesitas extensiones para verte fabulosa! Pide trenzas pequeñas o grandes con solo tus mechones naturales. Las trenzas protegen tu cabello del sol, el viento y el agua salada.

8. Cornrows con un diseño sencillo: Jugamos con las particiones para crear diseños geniales en el cuero cabelludo. Por cierto, este es uno de los peinados favoritos de los hombres, que también lucen cool con trenzas.

9. Trenzas Pop Smoke: Y, hablando de hombres que usan trenzas, puedes pedir 6 y 8 de estas trenzas que llevan el nombre del famoso artista.

Una de nuestras trenzadoras está muy triste por la pérdida de sus trenzas bohemias, que eran su creación favorita. Eficiencia

Queremos asegurarnos de que cada cliente reciba sus trenzas a tiempo y que no haya citas superpuestas. Considerando que las trenzas bohemias pequeñas pueden tomar hasta 7 horas… bueno, no son tan eficientes, por muy bien que se vean.

Reducción de Variables

Nuestra lista actual de peinados nos permite manejar el tipo de cabello de cada cliente. Además, en cuanto a las extensiones, algunos peinados requieren cabello 100% humano, que se enreda menos, pero es mucho más caro. En nuestro estudio, ofrecemos un producto híbrido entre cabello humano y sintético.

Popularidad

Claro, de vez en cuando recibimos un cliente que busca un peinado inusual. Pero la mayoría de las veces, la gente busca los estilos más populares, como las cornrows y las box braids (aquí les cuento las principales diferencias entre ambos peinados). Darles tantas opciones puede confundirlos. Después de todo, ¡muchas turistas que buscan trenzas en Puerto Rico se trenzan el cabello por primera vez! 

El proceso de formación

Nuestro objetivo es empoderar a los trenzadores locales (y a los aficionados que hasta ahora ni siquiera soñaban con convertirse en profesionales). Por eso ofrecemos seminarios y clases particulares de trenzado.

Al reducir nuestra lista de peinados, podemos capacitar a trenzadoras para crear esos 9 peinados que requieren las mismas técnicas de trenzado con pequeñas variaciones, como particiones. Peinados como los twists o las rastas requieren habilidades de trenzado completamente diferentes.

En cualquier caso, creemos firmemente que es mejor ser experta en una técnica y poder crear 9 peinados impecables que aprender más de 20 peinados con diferentes técnicas, algo que a cualquier trenzadora le tomaría más tiempo dominar. Queremos asegurarnos de que cada clienta salga de nuestro estudio con las trenzas de mejor calidad en Puerto Rico.
