My name is Vanessa Charles, and I’m the face behind Sunny Braids. We offer African braiding services at our studio, located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I’m happy to serve clients because, besides braiding, I’m passionate about people! That’s why I not only braid hair, but I’m also committed to educating people who want to become braiders and helping them achieve their dreams. I also enjoy IT and communication—I find that social media is a fantastic way to grow as a hairstylist and showcase my braiding services.

When I’m not braiding or teaching how to braid, I enjoy going to the beach, spending time with my friends, dancing, and listening to music. That’s why I’m thrilled to live in such a vibrant city as San Juan!

How I Became a Professional Braider

I always tell people that I taught myself how to braid hair because no one in my family had my kind of kinky hair. Every time we went on vacation, detangling my hair after a day at the beach was a total nightmare, so before hitting the waves or running on the shore, I absolutely had to get my hair braided. In the end, I learned how to handle it myself… so here I am!

My inspiration for creating the brand Sunny Braids comes from the time I started braiding hair professionally on the beach. I recall this particular moment when I kept staring at the sunlight shining on the braids, and I came up with the name: Sunny Braids. Ever since then, I haven’t stopped growing! After that first period on the beach, I moved to my home studio. Many clients find that getting their braids done indoors is more comfortable and clean.

Some time later, I had the chance to rent a booth in the Hilton Caribbean Hotel, which was a fantastic opportunity since I got booked by tourists all the time. Nowadays, I have my own studio located in Condado, a great location because we’re near the best beaches and in the center of San Juan’s nightlife. You’ll easily find us if you arrive from the airport or visit San Juan as a port of call during your cruise.

At Sunny Braids, we offer many different kinds of braiding services, especially beach braids since our main niche is tourists. However, I also have experience in the athlete niche and have recently developed a passion for festival braids—check out my collection of rave braids! Cómo Me Convertí en una Trenzadora Profesional

Siempre les digo a las personas que yo misma me enseñé a hacer trenzas porque nadie en mi familia tenía mi tipo de cabello rizado. Cada vez que íbamos de vacaciones, desenredar mi cabello después de un día en la playa era una pesadilla total, así que antes de ir al mar o jugar en la orilla, por supuesto que tenía que trenzarme el cabello. Al final, aprendí a manejarlo por mí misma… ¡y aquí estoy!

Mi inspiración para crear la marca Sunny Braids surgió de la época en la que comencé a trenzar profesionalmente en la playa. Recuerdo un momento en particular en el que no podía dejar de mirar la luz del sol brillando en las trenzas, y así surgió el nombre: Sunny Braids. ¡Desde entonces no he dejado de crecer! Después de esa primera etapa en la playa, me mudé a mi estudio en casa. Muchos clientes me dicen que hacerse las trenzas en interiores es más cómodo y limpio.

Un tiempo después, tuve la oportunidad de alquilar un espacio en el Hotel Hilton Caribbean, lo cual fue una oportunidad fantástica ya que los turistas me reservaban todo el tiempo. Hoy en día, tengo mi propio estudio ubicado en Condado, una excelente ubicación porque estamos cerca de las mejores playas y en el centro de la vida nocturna de San Juan. Nos encontrarás fácilmente si llegas desde el aeropuerto o visitas San Juan como puerto de escala durante tu crucero.

En Sunny Braids, ofrecemos muchos tipos diferentes de trenzado, especialmente trenzas de playa, ya que nuestro principal nicho son los turistas. Sin embargo, también tengo experiencia en el nicho de los atletas y, recientemente, he desarrollado una pasión por las trenzas de festivales; ¡échale un vistazo a mi colección de trenzas para raves!
