Styling gel offers a much stronger hold, perfect for controlling curly hair and defining the curls. The more unruly a certain hair is, the better the gel works! Of course, hair gel has a few drawbacks: It can feel a bit heavy and stiff if you apply too much product, and it doesn’t work quite as well with thin hair because it can weigh it down. A final con is that some gels (but not Shine ‘n Jam) contain alcohol and synthetic chemicals that can leave buildup.
Mousse is a lighter product, good for a soft definition of curls, adding volume, and holding waves in straight hair. Curls with mousse often look bouncier than with gel, which typically makes the hair a bit crunchier. However, it doesn’t offer enough hold if the client’s hair is kinky or has too much frizz. Besides, mousse doesn’t go well with humidity, and you need to reapply it more than once a day for the best results. Both gel and mousse are easy to apply and can be used on either dry or damp hair.
As a professional braider, I choose gel instead of mousse, not because it’s a better product, but because I find it suitable for the desired results and the natural hair type most of my clients have. Gel offers a structured style, which is what braided hairstyles require. As for the visual results, mousse doesn’t leave the hair as shiny as gel does. For my braids, I like a good gloss!

En cuanto a la mousse es un producto más ligero, bueno para definir suavemente los rizos, agregar volumen y mantener las ondas en el cabello liso. Pero al final, es una cuestión de preferencia personal y tipo de cabello. Como última palabra, diría que optes por el gel si el cabello de tu cliente es grueso y rizado, pero prueba con mousse si estás peinando (no trenzando) a alguien con cabello fino y liso; solo ten en cuenta que los resultados no durarán tanto.
