There’s a reason why so many tourists looking for fun things to do in Puerto Rico choose us. And that’s because at Sunny Braids, we do more than style hair—we create impact. In this article, you’ll learn why.

My name is Vanessa, and I started Sunny Braids because I had the dream of owning a professional braiding studio. What I couldn’t imagine is that in a few years, not only would I fulfill that goal, but the impact in my local community would be SO HUGE! I’m more grateful than ever that I started this business, not only because Sunny Braids has reached such a wide clientele, but also because more recently, we’ve begun to empower local artists. Keep reading so I can tell you all about it!

🌴 Serving the Traveler Community

At Sunny Braids, we serve a beautiful community of travelers looking to experience Puerto Rico in style. Right from the start, my target audience as a braider was tourists. Hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive in Puerto Rico all year long, looking forward to enjoying its amazing beaches, its warm sea water, walking around our rainforests, dancing all night long in our fabulous parties and concerts, and trying delicacies from Caribbean gastronomy. And many of those visitors want to get braids!

While there are other talented braiders in Puerto Rico, Sunny Braids is positioned as the top-rated studio on Google. Do you want to know why?

• Our professional braiding studio is conveniently located in the heart of San Juan, surrounded by dozens of hotels, making it easily accessible for tourists. 

• It’s more comfortable and convenient than simply getting braids done at the beach. You can relax with a cool drink and listen to music while one of our braiders creates your hairstyle of choice.

• Our website provides easy booking options. Therefore, if you know you are traveling to our island just for a couple of days and you want to save your spot, you can do it in advance to better organize your stay.

• We already have dozens of excellent reviews, which give potential clients the confidence they need to book with us.

• We offer multiple vacation styles, from classic box braids or cornrows to trendy boho braids or hair twists… You name it, you get it!

• Other than doing people’s hair, we want them to enhance their Puerto Rico experience! Our braiding styles keep their hair protected so they can enjoy their vacation without worrying about hair damage.

• Since most of our clients are tourists, we are ready to give them tips about things to do in Puerto Rico and recommend experiences, places to go, and must-sees. Indeed, next month we will be launching a new section on our website called Things To Do In Puerto Rico which will feature a calendar of fun activities and events to do while visiting the island.

For all of the above, it makes me proud to say that Sunny Braids serves our community with love. But our clientele is just a part of our mission statement, as we’ll see next.

👩🏽‍🎨Empowering Puerto Rican Braiders

Serving a growing clientele is amazing, but even more so is being able to reach fellow braiders and helping them achieve their own dreams. We empower local hair braiders by providing fulfilling job opportunities doing what they love. Since we are reaching a larger clientele as time passes, we are able to train and hire talented artists and allow them to express their creativity in our studio. Our dream is to empower braiding artists and provide the best braiding experience for travelers. And both dreams come hand in hand!

For the past few months, we’ve launched a fundraising campaign which has been a huge success. Since we started our campaign, we’ve received over a hundred donations from generous contributors. I’m impressed by all the support I had and couldn’t be more grateful for this amazing community! More than ever, I feel that Sunny Braids is more than a brand; it’s a family.

If you contributed to the fundraising, or if you are wondering about our plans, let me share with you what we’ve been doing with the money so far:

• We’ve been updating the studio with the funds. We’ve already painted the exterior walls and bought plenty of supplies for the inside of our trailer. Each purchase is possible thanks to your generous contributions! No matter how small it may seem, when you make a donation to our fundraising campaign, you are bringing a lot of people closer to their dreams.

• Although we still need to make some installations, such as wallpapers and such, we have already purchased most of the materials. It’s like having a wrapped gift! I can’t wait to see how everything looks once we finish setting up our dream working area.

• We have an interior designer who is coming to make our dream come true. She’s the one with the vision board who can guide us into making the best investments so our working space feels more comfortable and inspiring than ever!

• Regarding our main purpose, we’re ready to bring into our family two or three more braiders! Nothing compares with the satisfaction of seeing young, talented braiders acquire new skills and get better every day thanks to their hard work, dedication, and passion. I’m very excited to see our family grow.

By empowering and hiring new braiders, we are having a positive impact on the Puerto Rican community as we provide jobs to local talent. Again, this is also what I understand as “Serving our community with love.”

Moreover, we create unique opportunities for our braiders to expand and grow in new ways. One of our recent initiatives was offering braiding services at El Conquistador Resort during President’s Day weekend and Easter weekend, which gave our team exposure to a new clientele and luxury resort views. Another exciting initiative is our plan to take our braiders to EDC Las Vegas 2025, where they’ll braid for a completely different audience, explore new hairstyles, and gain valuable experience while traveling to a new city.

🌞Supporting Dreams

At Sunny Braids, we believe in beauty with purpose—where every braid supports a dream. Ever since I began as an individual braider, I knew that braids were more than just a fad. Each braided hairstyle is a personal statement, a declaration of love (love for yourself, love for nature, love for your natural hair, love for our African inheritance). This is what I mean when I say every braid supports a dream:

• Every time a client comes to get their hair braided with us for the first time, we want to know about who they are and help them find out which braided hairstyle better reflects their true self.

• We want the time they spend having their hair braided to be enjoyable! We know how long people have waited for their dreamy vacation, so their braiding appointment should be another fun thing to do in Puerto Rico. That’s why we also put effort into creating an easy, convenient system for booking appointments: We want to be respectful of your time.

• We know that nowadays, our digital life is also part of who we are. That’s why we use social media to share valuable tips and tricks, as well as post our creations to share our pride with the online community. Plus, being social media active helps us reach more local talents.

• Braided hairstyles are diverse depending on your preferences, hair type, lifestyle, and occasion. 

• Although our main niche at Sunny Braids is beach braids, we also work with athletes who need to keep their hair off their faces when they are training. We also have a special collection of festival braids. Ravers are another great clientele, and their requirements are quite different from our regular tourist clientele. • Beach braids help you make the most of your stay in Puerto Rico by keeping your hair protected. Forget about getting it tangled while you swim, scuba dive, or hike around one of our parks. Save time every evening with a convenient braided hairstyle you can easily maintain.

Me llamo Vanessa y abrí Sunny Braids porque soñaba con tener un estudio de trenzado profesional. 👩🏽‍🎨Empoderando a Trenzadoras Puertorriqueñas

Atender a una clientela creciente es increíble, pero aún más lo es poder llegar a otras trenzadoras y ayudarlas a alcanzar sus propios sueños. Empoderamos a trenzadoras locales brindándoles oportunidades laborales gratificantes haciendo lo que aman. Al llegar a una clientela cada vez mayor, podemos capacitar y contratar a artistas talentosas y permitirles expresar su creatividad en nuestro estudio. Nuestro sueño es empoderar a las trenzadoras y brindar la mejor experiencia de trenzado para viajeros. ¡Y ambos sueños van de la mano!

Durante los últimos meses, hemos lanzado una campaña de recaudación de fondos que ha sido todo un éxito. Desde que iniciamos nuestra campaña, hemos recibido más de cien donaciones de generosos colaboradores. Estoy impresionada por todo el apoyo que recibí y sumamente agradecida con esta increíble comunidad. Ahora más que nunca, siento que Sunny Braids es más que una marca; es una familia.

Si contribuiste a la recaudación de fondos o te preguntas sobre nuestros planes, déjame compartir contigo lo que hemos estado haciendo con el dinero hasta ahora:

• Hemos estado renovando el estudio con los fondos. Ya pintamos las paredes exteriores y compramos muchos materiales para el interior de nuestra caravana. ¡Cada compra es posible gracias a tus generosas contribuciones! Por muy pequeña que parezca, al hacer una donación a nuestra campaña de recaudación de fondos, estás acercando a muchas personas a sus sueños.

• Aunque todavía nos faltan algunas instalaciones, como el papel pintado, ya hemos comprado la mayoría de los materiales. ¡Es como tener entre las manos un regalo envuelto! Estoy deseando ver cómo queda todo una vez que terminemos de montar el espacio de trabajo de nuestros sueños.

• Tenemos una diseñadora de interiores que viene a hacer realidad nuestro sueño. Ella es quien tiene el tablero de visión y puede guiarnos para hacer las mejores inversiones para que nuestro espacio de trabajo se sienta más cómodo e inspirador que nunca.

• En cuanto a nuestro propósito principal, ¡estamos listos para incorporar a la familia a dos o tres trenzadoras más! Nada se compara con la satisfacción de ver a jóvenes y talentosas trenzadoras adquirir nuevas habilidades y mejorar cada día gracias a su esfuerzo, dedicación y pasión. Me emociona mucho ver crecer a nuestra familia.

Al capacitar y contratar a nuevos trenzadores, estamos teniendo un impacto positivo en la comunidad puertorriqueña, brindando empleo al talento local. De nuevo, esto también es lo que entiendo como "Servir a nuestra comunidad con amor".

Más aún, creamos oportunidades únicas para nuestras trenzadoras de expandirse y crecer en nuevos horizontes. Una de nuestras más recientes iniciativas fue ofrecer servicios de trenzado en El Conquistador Resort durante el fin de semana largo del Día de los Presidentes y Semana Santa, lo que dio a nuestro equipo exposición con una nueva clientela y lujosas vistas del resort. Otra iniciativa que nos entusiasma es nuestro plan de llevar a nuestras trenzadoras a EDC Las Vegas 2025, donde trenzarán a una audiencia completamente nueva, explorarán nuevos estilos, y ganarán valiosa experiencia mientras viajan a una nueva ciudad.

🌞Apoyando Sueños

En Sunny Braids, creemos en la belleza con propósito, donde cada trenza representa un sueño. Desde que comencé como trenzadora individual, supe que las trenzas eran más que una moda pasajera. Cada peinado trenzado es una declaración personal, una declaración de amor (amor por ti misma, amor por la naturaleza, amor por tu cabello natural, amor por nuestra herencia africana). A esto me refiero cuando digo que cada trenza representa un sueño:

• Cada vez que un cliente o una clienta vienen a trenzarse con nosotros por primera vez, queremos conocerlos y ayudarlos a descubrir qué peinado trenzado refleja mejor su verdadera esencia.

• ¡Queremos que el tiempo que pases trenzando tu cabello sea placentero! Sabemos cuánto tiempo has esperado las vacaciones de tus sueños, así que tu cita de trenzado debería ser otra actividad divertida en Puerto Rico. Por eso también nos esforzamos en crear un sistema fácil y conveniente para reservar citas: Queremos respetar tu tiempo.

• Sabemos que hoy en día, nuestra vida digital también forma parte de quienes somos. Por eso usamos las redes sociales para compartir consejos y trucos valiosos, así como para publicar nuestras creaciones y compartir nuestro orgullo con la comunidad en línea. Además, estar activos en redes sociales nos ayuda a llegar a más talentos locales.

• Los peinados trenzados varían según tus preferencias, tipo de cabello, estilo de vida y ocasión.

• Aunque nuestro nicho principal en Sunny Braids son las trenzas playeras, también trabajamos con atletas que necesitan mantener el cabello alejado de la cara durante sus entrenamientos. También tenemos una colección especial de trenzas para festivales.
