From Puerto Rico To Las Vegas To Braids at EDC Festival

Hello, Sunnies! Are you fans of electronic dance music? Well, I’m a big one! I am not particularly a rave veteran, as I only had my first experience last year, but ever since, I’ve become such an enthusiast of the rave culture that I can’t wait to attend EDC Las Vegas this May! As a professional braider, I’ve discovered a huge niche among ravers. However, braiding in festivals is quite different from my everyday experience as the owner of a professional braiding studio in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In this article, I’ll tell you about the 7 main differences between braiding protective braids for tourists on a beach vacation and creating flashy hairstyles for people at a massive rave… together with one similarity that may surprise you! Keep reading to learn more.

#1: The Braid Purpose

Let’s begin with something basic: Why do clients decide to get their hair braided in the first place? 

Our usual clientele in San Juan, Puerto Rico, are tourists who visit our island in search of fun things to do in Puerto Rico, such as sunbathing at the beach and swimming, scuba-diving, or surfing in the sea; exploring our beautiful national parks and living firsthand the experience of being in a rainforest; going out to visit Old San Juan and its many monuments and attractions; and overall having a fun time during their holidays. These clients want to get their hair braided to keep it protected from the sun and sea, and to save time in their vacation: No more wasting hours detangling their hair after being at the beach or in the swimming pool!

Our new clientele in Las Vegas is all about embracing the rave spirit and complementing their fabulous outfits with flashy, powerful hairstyles that better reflect their personality, tastes, and color choices. They want their hair to become a statement, as well as to show it in their cool pics of EDC. In a few words, festival braids are part of the whole rave experience.

In both cases, as professional braiders, we want our clientele to leave the studio with a hairstyle that better suits their purpose: Whether by accompanying our customers during a long stay at the beach, or allowing themselves to become the star of the dancefloor!

#2: The Braiding Appointment

Whether you come to San Juan, Puerto Rico, or to Las Vegas to attend EDC, I strongly recommend that you book your appointment in advance, although for different reasons.

During your vacation, you may want a braided hairstyle that lasts for several weeks, such as box braids with extensions. Of course, such hairstyles take several hours to create! With an appointment, you can better organize your vacation so getting your hair braided doesn’t overlap with day trips or events you’ve planned while visiting San Juan. When you choose your hairstyle, we can tell you what to expect regarding times, so you can relax while having your hair braided by one of our artists and not look at your watch constantly. Conversely, we can recommend specific styles, such as front cornrows, if you’re running short of time (for instance, if you are visiting Puerto Rico for just one afternoon as one of your destinations in a cruise).

At EDC, hairstyles are edgy and innovative, but don’t need to last as long as other protective braided hairstyles. Therefore, it usually takes about an hour to create them (or even less, as you can get an Electric Crown or a Wild Flower in minutes!). However, EDC only lasts for a weekend: From May 16 to May 18. We’ll only get to braid a selected few of the half a million expected attendees! Do you want to be one of them? Then you should book your appointment as soon as possible to get your spot!

#3: Colors and Accessories

Perhaps this is the biggest difference between braiding in my beloved San Juan and going to Las Vegas during EDC, which seems like a gigantic alien city in the middle of the desert.

In San Juan, most of our clients opt for colors such as copper brown or shades of blonde, which perfectly match their beach pictures. That touch of color enhances their tan and facial features while maintaining a natural look. As for accessories for their braids, most people ask for traditional beads, seashells, feathers, or strings.

On the contrary, EDC Las Vegas calls for sparkling, vibrant hairstyles that match the neon signs around us: Lots of pink, green, purple, or light blue braids filled with bubbles. As for accessories, festival braids go great with neon lights, shiny elements as hair jewelry, and as much glitter as you can imagine.

#4: Favorite Hairstyles

Beach braids and festival braids don’t always look alike, although certain classic hairstyles, such as six front cornrows or two braids fit perfectly well both with a swimsuit and a colorful, trendy, revealing rave outfit.

In San Juan, the most popular hair braiding styles are box braids, cornrows, and hair twists. They last for several weeks as long as you take care of your braids, so you can take them home after your vacation is over. They go great with different hair types, and keep your hair protected and stylish at the same time.

For EDC Las Vegas and other music festivals, I’ve come up with unique designs of festival braids. I don’t think of them as simple hairstyles but as a work of art and a statement of personality! They need to feel comfortable for ravers to dance all night without feeling tension on their scalp. They must easily take all kinds of rave accessories, and most importantly, they need to stand out. The favorite styles among my raver clientele when I first went to EDC last year were "Dancefloor Diva," "Rave Rapunzel," and "Wild Flower." #5: The Location

There’s no need to expand on how San Juan and Las Vegas are quite different from one another, right? These differences also apply to our studio.

In San Juan, we have a cozy trailer that feels like home. Recently, we’ve begun remodeling it to accommodate a larger clientele thanks to the generous contributions we got through our fundraising campaign. We want to use our beautiful terrace as part of our braiding studio. For me, being in our studio feels just like home.

In Las Vegas, we’re going to be braiding in a hotel room. We’ve teamed up with Live How You Want, the company you’re looking for if you want hotel & shuttle services for EDC Las Vegas. I think the hotel reflects the spirit of EDC quite well! Plus, it’s great to get air conditioning after being exposed to the heat of the Nevada desert.

#6: The Vibes

Both beach vacation days and a massive rave are about having fun, right? However, the two environments have different vibes. This reflects on my own experience as a professional braider.

In San Juan, our clients are eager to relax more than anything. They want to chill out with soft music. Sometimes, they want to talk to their braider, and we’re happy to give them plenty of recommendations on fun things to do in Puerto Rico, places to go, day trips, restaurants, and shows. Other times, they prefer that time for themselves. You can see them engaged in a book, a series, a video chat, or a podcast. Some clients may even doze off while having their hair braided!

At EDC, our clients want the party to keep going—yes, even during their braid appointment! We must play cool music that reminds them of the amazing lineup of artists they are about to see. Plus, we must braid them as fast as possible: We don’t want to get them off the dancefloor for too long, right?

#7: The Audience

Tourists in Puerto Rico and ravers are quite different, although I enjoy braiding them both!

In San Juan, people of different ages come to get their hair braided: Women, men, also children. Sometimes we braid the entire family for their beach vacation! We also have many local clients who regularly come to the studio because having their hair braided is part of their lifestyle.

At EDC, I discovered an amazing community: Ravers are kind, vibrant, and cheerful. All of them consider their outfit and hairstyle as a reflection of their personality, and prepare their look months in advance. They embrace the rave concept of PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect), which I totally relate to. I can’t wait to be a part of this community once again in this new edition of EDC Las Vegas!

De Puerto Rico a Las Vegas y a las Trenzas en el Festival EDC

¡Hola, Sunnies! ¿Les gusta la música electrónica? ¡Pues a mí sí! No soy precisamente una veterana de las raves, pues tuve mi primera experiencia el año pasado, pero desde entonces me he vuelto tan entusiasta de la cultura rave que estoy deseando ir a EDC Las Vegas este mayo. Como trenzadora profesional, he descubierto un nicho enorme entre los ravers. Sin embargo, trenzar en festivales es bastante diferente a mi experiencia diaria como dueña de un estudio de trenzado profesional en San Juan, Puerto Rico.

¿Quieren saber un poco más sobre mi trayectoria? En este artículo, les contaré las 7 principales diferencias entre crear trenzas protectoras para turistas en unas vacaciones en la playa y crear peinados llamativos para una gran fiesta rave… ¡y una similitud que quizás les sorprenda! Sigan leyendo para saber más.

#1: El propósito de las trenzas

Comencemos con algo básico: ¿Por qué nuestros clientes deciden trenzarse el cabello? Nuestra clientela habitual en San Juan, Puerto Rico, son turistas que visitan nuestra isla en busca de cosas divertidas para hacer en Puerto Rico, como tomar el sol en la playa y nadar, bucear o surfear en el mar; explorar nuestros hermosos parques nacionales y vivir de primera mano la experiencia de estar en una selva tropical; salir a visitar el Viejo San Juan y sus numerosos monumentos y atracciones; y en general pasar un rato divertido en sus vacaciones. Estas clientas quieren trenzarse el cabello para protegerlo del sol y el mar, y para ahorrar tiempo en sus vacaciones: ¡Se acabaron las horas desenredándose después de estar en la playa o la piscina!

Nuestra nueva clientela en Las Vegas busca abrazar el espíritu rave y complementar sus fabulosos atuendos con peinados llamativos y contundentes que reflejen mejor su personalidad, gustos y color. Quieren que su cabello se convierta en una declaración de intenciones, y pretenden lucirlo en sus geniales fotos de EDC. En pocas palabras, las trenzas de festival son parte de la experiencia rave.

En ambos casos, como trenzadoras profesionales, queremos que nuestros clientes salgan del estudio con un peinado que se adapte mejor a su propósito: ya sea acompañando a nuestros clientes durante una larga estancia en la playa o permitiéndose convertirse en la estrella de la pista de baile.

#2: La Cita 

Tanto si vienes a San Juan, Puerto Rico, como a Las Vegas para asistir a EDC, te recomiendo encarecidamente que reserves tu cita con antelación, aunque por diferentes motivos. Durante tus vacaciones, quizás quieras un peinado trenzado que dure varias semanas, como box braids con extensiones. ¡Claro que estos peinados toman varias horas! Con una cita, podrás organizar mejor tus vacaciones para que el trenzado no se superponga con las excursiones o eventos que hayas planeado durante tu visita a San Juan. Al elegir tu peinado, te informaremos sobre los horarios y la duración para que puedas relajarte mientras una de nuestros artistas te trenza el cabello sin que tengas que estar pendiente del reloj. Por otro lado, podemos recomendarte estilos específicos, como cornrows frontales, si tienes poco tiempo (por ejemplo, si visitas Puerto Rico solo una tarde como uno de tus destinos en un crucero).

En EDC, los peinados son atrevidos e innovadores, pero no necesitan durar tanto como otros peinados con trenzas protectoras. Por lo tanto, suelen tardar alrededor de una hora en hacerse (o incluso menos, ¡ya que puedes conseguir una Corona Eléctrica o una Flor Silvestre en minutos!). Sin embargo, EDC solo dura un fin de semana: del 16 al 18 de mayo. ¡Solo podremos trenzar a unas pocas seleccionadas del medio millón de asistentes esperados! ¿Quieres ser una de ellas? ¡Entonces reserva tu cita lo antes posible para conseguir tu lugar!

#3: Colores y Accesorios

Quizás esta sea la mayor diferencia entre trenzar en mi querido San Juan e ir a Las Vegas durante EDC, que parece una gigantesca ciudad alienígena en medio del desierto. En San Juan, la mayoría de nuestras clientas optan por colores como el castaño cobrizo o tonos rubios, que combinan a la perfección con sus fotos playeras. Ese toque de color realza su bronceado y sus rasgos faciales, manteniendo un look natural. En cuanto a los accesorios para sus trenzas, la mayoría pide cuentas tradicionales, conchas marinas, plumas o hilos.

Por el contrario, EDC Las Vegas invita a peinados brillantes y vibrantes que combinan con los anuncios de neón de alrededores: muchas trenzas rosas, verdes, moradas o celestes llenas de burbujas. En cuanto a los accesorios, las trenzas de festival van a la perfección con elementos luminosos, otros brillantes como joyas para el cabello y todo el glitter que puedas imaginar.

#4: Peinados Favoritos

Las trenzas playeras y las trenzas de festival no siempre se ven iguales, aunque ciertos peinados clásicos, como seis cornrows delanteras o dos trenzas, combinan a la perfección tanto con un traje de baño como con un atuendo rave colorido, moderno y revelador.

En San Juan, los estilos de trenzado más populares son las box braids, las cornrows y los twists. Duran varias semanas siempre que las cuides, así que puedes llevártelas a casa después de las vacaciones. Combinan de maravilla con diferentes tipos de cabello y lo mantienen protegido y con estilo a la vez.

Para EDC Las Vegas y otros festivales de música, he creado diseños únicos de trenzas de festival. No las considero simples peinados, sino una obra de arte y una declaración de personalidad. Deben ser cómodas para que las ravers bailen toda la noche sin sentir tensión en el cuero cabelludo. Deben ser fáciles de llevar con todo tipo de accesorios rave y, lo más importante, deben destacar. Los estilos favoritos de mi clientela raver cuando fui por primera vez a EDC el año pasado eran "Diva de la Pista de Baile", "Rapunzel Raver" y "Flor Silvestre". #5: La Ubicación

No hace falta explicar en qué tan diferentes son San Juan y Las Vegas, ¿verdad? Estas diferencias también se aplican a nuestro estudio.

En San Juan, tenemos una acogedora caravana que se siente como parte del hogar. Recientemente, hemos comenzado a remodelarla para poder recibir a una clientela más grande gracias a las generosas contribuciones que recibimos a través de nuestra campaña de recaudación de fondos. Queremos usar nuestra hermosa terraza como parte de nuestro estudio de trenzado. Para mí, estar en nuestro estudio es como estar en casa.

En Las Vegas, trenzaremos en una habitación de hotel. Además, es genial tener aire acondicionado después de estar expuesta al calor del desierto de Nevada.

#6: Las vibras

Tanto los días de vacaciones en la playa como una gran fiesta rave se tratan de divertirse, ¿verdad? Sin embargo, ambos ambientes tienen una energía muy diferente. Esto se refleja mi propia experiencia como trenzadora profesional.

En San Juan, nuestros clientes buscan desconectarse y descansar por encima de todo. Quieren relajarse con música suave. A veces, quieren hablar con su trenzadora, y con gusto les ofrecemos muchas recomendaciones sobre actividades divertidas en Puerto Rico, lugares para visitar, excursiones de un día, restaurantes y espectáculos. Otras veces, prefieren ese tiempo para ellos mismos. Puedes verlos absortos en un libro, una serie, una videollamada o un podcast. ¡Algunos clientes incluso se quedan dormidos mientras les trenzan el pelo!

En EDC, nuestros clientes quieren que la fiesta no pare, ¡sí, incluso durante su cita de trenzas! Debemos poner música cool que les recuerde el increíble lineup de artistas que están a punto de ver. Además, debemos trenzarlos lo más rápido posible: no queremos que se queden fuera de la pista de baile demasiado tiempo, ¿verdad?

#7: El público

Los turistas en Puerto Rico y los ravers son muy diferentes, ¡aunque disfruto trenzarlos a ambos!

En San Juan, vienen personas de diferentes edades a trenzarse: mujeres, hombres, incluso niños, ¡a veces trenzamos a toda la familia para sus vacaciones en la playa! También tenemos muchos clientes locales que vienen regularmente al estudio porque trenzarse el cabello es parte de su estilo de vida.

En EDC, descubrí una comunidad increíble: los ravers son amables, vibrantes y alegres. Todos consideran que su atuendo y peinado son un reflejo de su personalidad y preparan su look con meses de anticipación. Adoptan el concepto rave de PLUR (Paz, Amor, Unidad y Respeto), con el que me identifico totalmente. ¡Estoy deseando volver a formar parte de esta comunidad en esta nueva edición de EDC Las Vegas!

¡Y una similitud!

A pesar de las muchas diferencias entre trenzar turistas en San Juan y crear trenzas para festivales en EDC Las Vegas, hay algo en común: ¡lo disfruto muchísimo! No hay nada que me guste más que ayudar a las personas a crear un peinado trenzado único que refleje su personalidad y mejore su experiencia.
